City of Thermal Springs and History

Best time to visit: All year for thermal spas; October–April is the most pleasant Suggested stay: 1-2 days

About — Afyonkarahisar

Afyonkarahisar is an inland city in western Türkiye known for its thermal springs, its castle on a volcanic rock and its rich dairy products. It is about 4.5–5 hours by road from Istanbul and around 3 hours from Ankara, which also makes it a convenient overnight stop on a road trip to Pamukkale or Antalya. Most families stay in the large thermal resort hotels outside the city, in the Gazligol or Omer–Gecek areas, which have indoor and outdoor thermal pools.

The hotels offer family pools, hammams and spa treatments, and many guests simply relax on site. Afyon Castle crowns the rock above the old town; several hundred steps lead up to wide views. Below it, the Ulu Cami (Great Mosque) is known for its many carved wooden columns supporting a flat wooden ceiling. In the Phrygian Valley, under an hour away, the rock-cut village of Ayazini has tombs, rooms and a church carved into soft volcanic rock, and the Phrygian tomb of Aslantas is guarded by two huge carved lions.

Family tips: winter is the main spa season, when the region is cold and often snowy, while summers are warm and dry. Halal food and mosques are easy to find; try Afyon kaymak (clotted cream) with honey at breakfast, the local sucuk and Turkish delight made with kaymak. If separate women's spa areas or hours matter to you, tell us when choosing the hotel. Two nights are enough, and a private vehicle is the easiest way to combine the city, the Phrygian Valley and the hotels.
