Planning a Bosphorus cruise in Istanbul? Compare the city ferry, 90-minute tourist boats, dinner cruises and private yachts, plus tips on timing and seats.
The Bosphorus is a 30-kilometre strait dividing Istanbul in two, and seeing it from the water is the easiest way to understand the city. More than 600 historic waterfront mansions, four palaces, three bridges and two fortresses line its two shores. Boat options fall into four groups: the city ferry, short tourist boats, dinner cruises and private yacht charters. Which suits you depends on budget, time and who you are travelling with.
City Lines long cruise (cheapest)
The official 'Long Bosphorus Tour' departing from Eminonu goes all the way to Anadolu Kavagi, stops there long enough for lunch and returns; the round trip takes about 6 hours and costs approximately 250 TL per person. The short Bosphorus tour reaches Istinye and returns in 2 hours for around 150 TL. Fares change, so check the current price at the pier. The ferries are large with wide decks and tea service, but there is no guide, and in summer you need to queue 30 minutes early for the 10:35 departure.
Tourist boats (90 minutes)
Private company boats leave Eminonu and Kabatas every hour, sail up to Rumeli Fortress and back, and cost approximately 20–25 USD per person; many have Arabic audio commentary. They are crowded but short and practical; 90 minutes is ideal for families with children. Our Bosphorus Cruise & Two Continents Tour combines this boat trip with a guided programme, Beylerbeyi Palace and Camlica, with hotel transfers all day.
Sunset and dinner cruises
Dinner boats departing at 20:30 last 3 hours and include a set menu and folklore show; the alcohol-free package costs approximately 50–60 USD per person. The illumination of the bridges and palaces at sunset is spectacular. Choose boats with a family section, and in Ramadan ask about special departures timed to iftar. Book knowing that the show includes belly dancing; 'quiet' boats without dancing are also available if you prefer.
Private yacht (most comfortable)
A 2-hour private yacht for up to 12 guests starts at approximately 450 USD, including captain, crew, fruit and soft drinks. The route and time are yours; the most popular choice is sunset between 18:00 and 20:00. Ideal for birthdays, honeymoons and large family gatherings; catering, cake and a photographer can be added. It can be arranged as a ladies-only or family-only cruise.
What you see
On the European shore: Dolmabahce Palace, Ortakoy Mosque and the bridge, the wooden mansions of Arnavutkoy, Bebek bay and Rumeli Fortress; on the Asian shore: Beylerbeyi Palace, the Kuleli Military School, Kuzguncuk and the Maiden's Tower. The best frame of the trip is the moment Ortakoy Mosque and the 15 July Bridge line up together. Morning sun lights up the European shore, while afternoon and evening sun falls on the Asian shore.
Practical tips
The wind means you need a cardigan on deck even in summer. Feeding simit to the seagulls is the children's favourite moment, although most tourist boats no longer allow it; it is fine on the ferry. Seasickness is rare on the Bosphorus as the water is calm. For photos, remember that heading up the strait the European shore is on your left and the Asian shore on your right, and the other way round on the return, so choose your side accordingly. Book dinner cruises and private yachts at least 48 hours ahead, and a week ahead during Ramadan and Eid; our Bosphorus Dinner Cruise and Private Bosphorus Yacht Cruise can be reserved through our 24/7 WhatsApp support.
