Is Türkiye Safe to Travel? A Guide for Gulf Families

Is Türkiye safe to travel? Practical safety tips for Gulf families: common scams to avoid, health care, emergency numbers and how we support our guests 24/7.

Türkiye is one of the world's most visited countries, and Istanbul alone receives many millions of visitors a year. For families from the Gulf it is one of the most comfortable countries between Europe and Asia, thanks to cultural closeness, halal food and family-oriented infrastructure. Police presence is high in tourist areas, and the tourism police in Sultanahmet, Taksim, Cappadocia and Antalya serve visitors in English and Arabic.

What to watch for in the city

The most common problem in Istanbul is not violence but petty scams: taxis that do not switch on the meter, friendly strangers who lead you to an overpriced bar, and fake leather and gold in the Grand Bazaar. The fix is simple: call taxis through the BiTaksi or Uber apps, politely decline invitations from strangers at night, and buy gold and carpets only at shops your guide recommends. On crowded trams and around Eminonu, keep your bag in front of you.

For families and women

Families, women and children from the Gulf move around Istanbul with ease; districts such as Fatih, Sultanahmet and Basaksehir have large Arabic-speaking communities. Women who wear a headscarf generally face no issues. Simply avoid the back streets of Taksim after 23:00; the main avenues and the waterfront remain busy and well lit at night.

Health and emergencies

Private hospitals in Türkiye are of a high standard and many employ Arabic interpreters; the Fatih and Bakirkoy branches of chains such as Acibadem, Memorial and Medipol are used to Gulf patients. Travel insurance is strongly advised; a consultation without insurance starts at around 100–150 USD. The emergency number is 112, and it has foreign-language support. Pharmacies are everywhere, and many common medicines are sold over the counter (antibiotics need a prescription).

Natural hazards and transport

Istanbul lies in an earthquake zone; hotels built after 2000 follow the modern building code, and we select our partner hotels accordingly. Roads are good but traffic is heavy; for intercity travel use a licensed driver and an insured vehicle. In summer, sunstroke on the Mediterranean coast and swimming in rough seas on the Black Sea are the most frequent health issues.
