Istanbul Halal Food Guide: District by District

Istanbul halal food guide: from the Arabic restaurants of Fatih and Eminonu's fish sandwiches to alcohol-free Bosphorus views and Ramadan iftar tables.

Finding halal food in Istanbul is not the problem; the problem is choosing, among tens of thousands of restaurants, the ones that are family-friendly, alcohol-free and fairly priced. Meat sold in Türkiye is overwhelmingly halal-slaughtered, and 'halal' signs are rare because it is the norm. The two things to check are whether alcohol is served and, rarely, pork products in western-style restaurants. This guide summarises the districts and dishes we recommend to our guests.

Fatih and Aksaray: the heart of Arabic cuisine

Aksemsettin, Malta and Fevzipasa streets in Fatih are lined with Syrian, Lebanese, Iraqi and Yemeni restaurants; menus are in Arabic, staff speak Arabic and none serve alcohol. The best addresses for mandi, kabsa, shawarma and Aleppo kebab are here; a family of four eats well for about 30–45 USD. In Aksaray you find Uzbek and Uyghur restaurants (pilaf, lagman) and south-eastern kebab houses (Adana, Urfa, liver). The Carsamba neighbourhood around Fatih Mosque is the most authentic place for traditional Turkish home cooking (beans, rice, tandir).

Sultanahmet and Eminonu: choosing well in the tourist zone

The restaurants facing the square in Sultanahmet are expensive and most serve alcohol; the family restaurants two streets back (Ottoman cuisine, pottery kebab, pide) are better and alcohol-free. At Eminonu, the fish-sandwich boats (mackerel) serve one of the city's cheapest and most famous bites, and the historic hans behind the Spice Bazaar serve meatballs and beans. The bean restaurants beside Suleymaniye Mosque are Istanbul's most famous lunch and entirely alcohol-free.

Bosphorus and Uskudar: views without alcohol

Most restaurants on the Bosphorus shore serve alcohol; for alcohol-free with a view, the Uskudar waterfront (tea gardens and restaurants facing the Maiden's Tower), Pierre Loti Hill in Eyup and the municipal facilities on Camlica Hill are the best choices. In Ortakoy, kumpir and waffles are alcohol-free street treats. Breakfast places in Bebek and Arnavutkoy are alcohol-free until noon and face the Bosphorus.

Malls and families with children

The food courts of the major malls serve halal food and most have no alcohol; Mall of Istanbul, Istinye Park and Emaar Square have Arabic restaurants and children's menus. The big burger and pizza chains in Türkiye use halal meat. The safest choices for children are pide, manti, meatballs and chicken skewers; if you do not want spice, just say 'acisiz'.

Eating in Ramadan

Restaurants stay open during the day in Ramadan, and those not fasting eat comfortably. Iftar menus (soup, pide, main course, gullac) are prepared from 17:00 and cost about 15–30 USD per person; the municipal iftar tent on Sultanahmet Square is free and hosts thousands every evening. For suhoor, the restaurants of Fatih stay open until dawn. Iftar reservations are essential; restaurants around Suleymaniye and Eyup fill two days ahead.

Dessert and coffee

Karakoy Gulluoglu (pistachio baklava), Hafiz Mustafa (since 1864, branches in Sultanahmet and Eminonu), Haci Bekir (Turkish delight, 1777) and Ali Usta in Kadikoy (ice cream) should not be missed. Buy Turkish coffee from Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi at the Spice Bazaar. For kunefe, head to the shops of masters from Hatay in Fatih; for Arabic sweets (Nabulsi kunafa, Damascus-style baklava), again Aksemsettin Street in Fatih.

Our guides' rule

On our Istanbul package tours, such as the Istanbul Tour (7 Nights / 8 Days), guides choose halal, alcohol-free restaurants and offer three lunch options: Ottoman cuisine, Arabic cuisine or a quick street meal; the price list is shown in advance. Tipping is optional; 5–10 percent is enough. Tell us about allergies and children's preferences on WhatsApp beforehand, and the guide chooses the restaurant accordingly.
